Reflection: Intervention and Extension Word Problems with 3 Addends Part III - Section 3: Independent Practice

I have varying skill levels in my room when it comes to solving word problems. I have some students who can look at a word problem that contains multiple data pieces and solve mentally. Also, I have students who are very much still at the concrete stage and need objects to manipulate and use to solve problems. Watch this video, solve problem using objects, to see me assisting a concrete thinker work on word problems containing 3 addends. There is nothing wrong with a student being a concrete thinker at the First Grade level. It is very common and is the beginning stage of problem solving. This student will progress from this stage and eventually be able to think abstractly and solve mentally, but in the meantime she needs the support of objects to solve.
