Reflection: Intervention and Extension Contractions With "Have" - Section 4: Closure


I won't say that I never utilize worksheets with my classroom.  I do use them as part of the seat work routines and when reviewing skills, and I used to use them for contractions.  This year was the first year, however, that I used VKVs to practice making and reading contractions.  I will always use VKVs (or another Dinah Zyke activity) from now on when teaching contractions.  When making these VKVs, students actually write the two words that make up the contraction, which letter or letters get taken out, and replace those letters by making an apostrophe.  This is a very hands-on, physical activity that solidifies first grader understanding of the concept.

As a result, I have noticed that when students encounter contractions in they're reading, they are much more fluent when reading them.  Even my struggling readers are experiencing less problems.  They struggle at times, but I notice that when I give them the prompt and say, for example, "This is the contraction for I have," I see them softly saying to themselves, "I have - I've". Reading contractions is becoming more automatic for them, and that's what my goal was.  Automaticity when decoding will lead to better comprehension. 

Having said that, I still want to offer my students more independent practice. I'd love to say that I create every resource for my classroom, but there aren't 48 hours in a day.  This is where I work smarter and not harder and find resources that other teachers have made.  I've found several free activities on Teachers Pay Teachers that you can also use for either independent work time or literacy centers.  The more experience we give to children, the more confident they will be.
