Reflection: Student Ownership Poetry: Structure and Meaning - Section 3: Share our Findings


     I was impressed that some students were able to find deeper meaning in their poems.  As we discussed how we find deeper meaning, students relate the theme of the poem to their own experiences.  Granted, students' prior life experiences are limited since they are only eight years old.  However, I am impressed by the quality of details they express in tying the literal meaning to a deeper meaning that relates into their real world experiences.  I think starting out with the literal meaning and scaffolding to the figurative meaning helps because it is using what they already know to explore unfamiliar areas of learning.
