Reflection: Joy Multiplying Decimals - Section 2: Practice


When thinking about how to engage students in learning that is somewhat deep in content I try to think of ways to put the focus on something interesting to them as people.  For example, the Scholastic Study Jams are pretty much outlining how I would have taught the multiplying of decimals to my students but it is interactive.  You get to push buttons and there are cool colors and graphics.  So even though it might be the same thing that I am teaching, the students become a little more interested because of all the bells and whistles that are accompany it. 

I mean, I think I’m a pretty interesting person to listen to and make learning exciting but if kids are willing to focus more on an interactive/animation of a concept, I’ll take the back seat.  It works.  Students were able to easily follow along with the interactive and learned how to the concept of multiplying decimals.
