Reflection: Checks for Understanding A Valentine's Sonnet: Writing Sonnets After Examining Shakespeare's Sonnet 116 - Section 3: Writing Sonnets


For students, the best part of class was sharing the stories. They laughed so hard and were really proud of their work. I also enjoyed that time, but I think my favorite part of class was watching them write the sonnets. They had to navigate rhyme scheme, meter, and meaning. They were counting syllables and trying to think of creative rhymes. They were so focused.

I have never tried this lesson before reading any of the play; I usually try something like this around the time we read the party scene, when the words of both Romeo and Juliet form a sonnet together. I moved it because I didn't want to have one class of the play before vacation-- it just seemed too disjointed-- and I think this was a really useful change. I plan to incorporate more discussion of the Shakespearean sonnet when we work with the prologue because I know that they are ready for it.
