Reflection: Lesson Planning It’s in the Plot - Section 4: Collaborative Activity


First Graders are on the cusp of learning to share, which is one reason, in this lesson, it is important to make sure you have enough copies of the book so that there are at least two books in each small group.  Besides learning to share and collaborate, your First Graders are learning to read.  The more copies of the text per group the better.  At this stage of their academic careers many (most) students will tune out if they are not holding the book.  With goal of gleaning evidence from text each student should have his/her own book.  I was lucky enough to be able to borrow enough copies of Morse the Moose from my colleagues, school library, and city's public library.  If this is not your case, try smaller groups of two where your students are partner reading.

This is the first time I used the I Think About Important Events in Stories activity sheet.  My students found it to be challenging and suggested putting titles such as 'in the beginning', 'middle', and 'at the end' at the top of each section to make it easier to understand and remember what they are suppose to do.
