Reflection: Vertical Alignment My Brain is a File Cabinet - Section 2: Mini-lesson

Here is a review of the book Ninth Ward. I have to say, I've been enjoying this book tremendously. Here's how it happened that I chose it: I have a student who is a Katrina refugee. His first memory (he was 3 at the time) is of people in their cars as they are filling up with water. In a meeting with the school psych, his foster mother, and his conselor, we decided to go ahead with the book because he had started talking about Katrina again in counseling sessions, and reading it might answer lingering questions.

Of course, it's highly engaging for the rest of my students as well. Both the main character and her dog can see ghosts! It connects to our first Embedded Assessment of "an incident that changed you."

My Brain is a File Cabinet

Unit 5: Independent Reading
Lesson 2 of 20

Objective: SWBAT: metacognitively identify when they have schema about a certain topic as they read independently.

Big Idea: When students are able to use background knowledge when they read, the ability to comprehend is drastically improved. And that's a good thing!
