Reflection: High Quality Task The Family Quadrilateral Tree - Section 1: Warm Up


Today students were challenged to rely on their classmates, rather than me, to determine which shape(s) satisfied the requirements. I facilitated learning, and noticed that students were quick to refer to their quadrilateral chart and disqualify shapes that didn't meet the requirements. In doing this, students are using inductive reasoning (and using tools strategically - MP5). My purpose for approaching hierarchies as an investigation is to make the concept meaningful.

To facilitate learning, I encouraged students to think about the problem in multiple ways. It was interesting to see which students thought "outside of the box", and determined multiple answers. A few groups simply stopped when the shape met an initial set of criteria - say a "square", and thought that they were done before I prompted them to continue to consider more criteria when examining their shape. The students realized that "square" did meet the requirements, but then I reminded them to think about their puzzle pieces that they've put together in the past: "Were the pieces square?" No,.... So this prompted them to think more critically.
