Reflection: High Quality Task The Ways to Freedom - Section 1: My Lens

I knew I was going to be out of the classroom for two consecutive days, so I structured a readers workshop lesson with both the students and the guest teacher in mind.  I wanted everyone to have a meaningful, positive experience during readers workshop.  I chose student research on the Underground Railroad using ipads because students are familiar with this learning task, they enjoy using technology, and are always successful navagating the internet.

First, I found a good website on the Underground Railroad, and then the rest was relatively simple.

This lesson was effective and easy to implement.  But the real bonus was that the learning task added to the students background knowledge about slavery in general and the the Underground Railroad specifically, a concept critical to understanding the historical context of the 1850s.
