Reflection: Joy Hunting for Snow: An Internet Research Project (Second Day) - Section 1: Digging for More Details: Finishing Up Research

I find I get the biggest bang for my buck in teaching by developing relationships with students. Now, when I say that, I do not mean that I'm a door mat.  I am T. O. U. G. H. on my students with strict routines and high expectations, but I temper that toughness with an individual approach for each one of them.

Just like in academics, students come with all kinds of prior "emotional" knowledge.  I find it most important to make deposits into their emotional bank accounts so that when I have to be tough on them and make a "withdrawal" it doesn't damage my relationship with them.

So it goes in supplying materials.  I used to fight it and insist that they should just "have" the supplies at home.  But, one other thing that experience and wisdom has taught me is it's not a student's fault if they don't have a glue stick.  (Sometimes MY own kids don't have a glue stick at home!!)  In order to ensure that grades, egos and self esteems don't suffer, I make it clear to my students that needing materials is NOT a reason to have an incomplete assignment.

Because I've developed strong relationships with my students and made those emotional deposits, they feel safe enough to ask me for what they need and they respect me enough to return what I give them!!
