Reflection: Gradual Release Creating an Analytical Lens: Determining Point of View in Primary Source Documents (Day 1 of 3) - Section 3: Analysis of a Primary Source


Students had a much harder time with this concept today. Due to their blank stares when I was reviewing the SOAPSTone method, I decided it would be best to work with them as a whole class on the first document. They did really well with the SOAPSTone portion of the analysis, but struggle with the P.O.V. statements. This surprised me a little bit, but I wonder if it is because the P.O.V. statements require them to synthesize their thinking, which is a higher level task.

After walking through this process with them today, I decided that the best course of action would be to build the rest of our practice lessons around a gradual release model. Today was our whole group practice; tomorrow will be small group work and then Friday will be individual application of the skills (hopefully) learned.
