Reflection: Grappling with Complexity Similes and Metaphors Compare! - Section 3: Guided Practice


All throughout their entire lives we are trying to get them to follow a process! It is no different and more important than when we are writing! I try to tell the students how much easier their lives would be, when it comes to writing, if they would follow the writing process.  Most students really just feel as if brainstorming is such a waste of time.  They want to get right into it, not realizing the rich detail that brainstorming can provide. 

Today, I really encouraged them to brainstorm their ideas before attempting to write anything! Most students put up a fight, but realized I was not backing down! Finally, they gave in and developed their brainstorm lists for their own puzzling portraits.  Most students changed their minds a few times, seeing the value in brainstorming.  Other students who usually struggle with writing, became excited with their ideas and very eager to begin. 

I know it can be tough to encourage, but was worth it.

Objective: SWBAT to write using similes and metaphors.

Big Idea: Students look in the mirror to compare! Students will be writing about themselves using similes and metaphors. They will create one "Puzzling Portrait!"
