Reflection: Student Led Inquiry Comparing the Text to the Film, Part 2 - Section 2: Comparing the Text to the Film


I was apprehensive about showing this version of the movie because it's not true to the novel. Joe, for instance, isn't as sweet and mild-mannered in the movie as he is in the text; when he visits Pip in London, he isn't awkward and nervous, but angry and indignant. This major change threw students at first, since it's so unexpected, but it did start a meaningful conversation about character development and poetic license.Some students liked the change because they wanted someone to yell at Pip for his bad behavior, while others were disappointed that changed Joe's personality. It was fun to see them debate this point. I will definitely show this version again.

Objective: SWBAT analyze the representation of a subject or a key scene in two different artistic mediums, including what is emphasized or absent in each treatment by comparing the director's decisions with Dickens' decisions.

Big Idea: Actively watching the film can encourage students to think about the novel in new ways.
