Reflection: Lesson Planning Comparing the Weather - Section 2: Teaching the Lesson


I created the form for comparing temperatures in Maine and Florida. I wanted students to be presented with several formats for looking at the data. What I found out was that students were really confused by the change in presentation of the question. I changed what I asked first, and students just assumed it would be the same. When the different format didn't work, they were confused.

This suggests that students sometimes expect things to be the same, and don't carefully read what is presented to them. 

As teachers, especially during math, we have to be sure that the reading is not the problem when students are not understanding what needs to be done to solve a problem. We want students to become independent at reading words and translating that into solving the math problems, but at second grade, we want to slow down and teach students how to read the problems carefully and to think about what is being asked. This is a skill that is very important to later mathematical reasoning.
