Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Who's Your Inventor? - Section 5: Writing Independently


An important shift with the CCSS is integrating the writing with the reading. Students need a daily dose of writing. Writing needs to happen across the different subject areas and be connected with what they are talking about, reading about, etc. In this way, they will be able to use the academic language they are learning in an authentic manner and synthesize their understandings.

I knew I wanted my students to write about what the inventors invented, and, in reading their work, I was happy to see that they included that in their responses. I kept saying to them, think about what what was important in their lives. At the end of the lesson, I wondered whether I had needed to add the, think about what they invented because it seems I got stuck on asking, "what was important in their lives?"

In their responses my students were able to provide details not just about what their inventors invented but also about other pertinent information. For example, one student mentioned that it took George Washington Carver 20 years to go to college. I feel this is an important point in the trajectory of GWC's life for this student to pick up on.

Our district's reading program is comprised of anthologies. This particular story, African-American Inventors, is a good source because it includes four different inventors. But I was happy to provide additional books so my students would not feel obligated to choose one of the four inventors. Alexander Graham Bell is one such inventor:

As we transition into the CCSS, it is imperative we provide students with a variety of books within the different topics we teach. It means being creative and gathering the resources that we have around us.
