Reflection: Debate Prove it with Textual Evidence: Miss Havisham’s Death Was no Accident - Section 3: Let's Debate


The mini-debate was great. Four students began class believing that the fire was an accident; they even had some textual evidence to support their argument. They stood before their opponents confident and ready, but they were blown away by the opposition. The majority of the class argued that the Miss Havisham wanted to die and their textual support was overwhelming, so overwhelming that the four who stood strong at the beginning conceded. They fought at first, but ultimately realized that the textual evidence for the opposition far surpassed anything they could find. The best part was that they conceded gracefully; they recognized the shortcomings in their own arguments. I am hoping that the lesson here translates into their writing.
