Reflection: Modeling Text Structure: Cause and Effect - Section 3: Guided Practice

Cause and Effect is one structure you think would be very easy for the students to grasp.  However, they really struggle with identifying which is the cause and which is the effect.  They always seem to reverse the two.  It can be very frustrating because it just makes sense to us! Why doesn't it just make sense to them?

Today, as I was modeling, I stopped to address some confusion as to which statement was the cause and which was the effect.  I ended up telling the kids a trick that I have found helpful.  I asked them to say "because of _______________, this happened."  They were able to find much more success using this statement.  It seemed to help them pinpoint the cause and then go from there to identify the effect.

I think, in future lessons, I will spend a little time within this lesson to practice identifying cause and effect.  It really seems to stop the lesson and confuse the students.  I think it would be helpful for their understanding of the structure.
