Reflection: Trust and Respect Making a Time Line - Section 3: Writing


This timeline activity is a great way for me to get to know my students on a personal level.  It does take away some class time at the beginning of the year, but I think that it is definitely worth it.  Sometime students reveal events that help me understand them like parents divorcing or family deaths.  The timelines also allow me to find out what my students value.  This information helps me plan my instruction by choosing reading and writing assignments that are relatable to my students. 

In addition, since I start out with narrative writing, this activity gets the students thinking about their lives and experiences.  When we do our pre assessment prompt, I hope that making the time line will have sparked some ideas in their brains, and they will easily think of a topic. 

I love having the time line as part of the time capsule.  It is such an amazing memento to present to my students at the end of the year.
