Reflection: Staircase of Complexity Aarrr, Matey! Hoist the Sails and Read Closely: Pirate Week Day 1 of 5 - Section 3: Prereading Activities: How I Became a Pirate

The Common Core asks us to focus strong instruction around a grade appropriate text.  The particular text we're using this week, falls within our Lexile band for third grade, and is very popular with the students.  It is a book most will pick up again and again.  I have also found that it's important to give my students enough time on a text.  In the past, students read more books, and took computer based programs containing "right there" questions, where now I have my students focusing more on always reading, rereading and writing.  They have a deeper understanding, and start the next book with a whole new wealth of experience.
