Reflection: Intervention and Extension Character Traits Quiz - Section 3: Assessment


I recognize that students will not receive leveled texts based on their reading ability on the end-year-assessment. However, I continue to work on increasing phonics and increasing reading skills during reading groups. In the meantime, I want be able to assess their comprehension skills. That is not possible if the text is not at their independent reading level. This is in line with the school of thought that phonics does not have to precede comprehension instruction. I teach then in tandem. When students’ phonics skills catch up with their comprehensive skills, they will have met CCSS RL. 10 (By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, at the high end of the grades 2–3 text complexity band independently and proficiently).
