Reflection: Student Ownership Board Game Assembly: Bringing It All Together - Section 2: Board Game Assembly


Today has been all about solving the design problem of creating a boardgame that reviews the novel, "The Catcher in the Rye." When presented with the problem of the game, I certainly got the initial complaints, including, "The only people I know who play board games are little kids and my grandma." Student buy-in came, though; and groups quickly began debating and discussing how to create their games.

This assembly and play test day comes as we return to class after a two week winter break, with additional unexpected days off for snow days. As such, we are adjusting the schedule and "playing catch-up," in order to make sure students can complete and play the game, since the point of creating a game should be to experience playing it.

Today, students were, for the most part prepared. Before our winter break, I stressed to them the entire group's success was dependent on everyone contributing on time. In the case of the three students who were not prepared, the excuse was all the same, "I didn't know it was due because of the days off (snow days)." Each of these students were firmly reminded that their contributions must be completed tomorrow, and their grades will be affected. To their credit, all three began creating a "substitute" for their component, such as a hand-drawn game board.

Today, students were able to quickly assemble their pieces, and moved on to play testing their games. As can be seen in today's video, there was some explaining and clarifying the rule within groups, but I attribute this to the long stretch between design and play before and after winter break.

Overall, when presented with a problem, and specific parameters within which to solve it, students showed an ability to solve the problem in a way that showed ownership.
