Reflection: Discourse and Questioning New Words and Connecting Ideas - Section 5: Students Take a Turn


When the students were making their timeline, they found that some books had dates for each event and others had some dates but also just temporal words.  Some of the groups wanted to do the math and figure out what 'after 100 years' or '3 years before that' could be, based on given dates.  Other groups were less focused on specific dates.  I believe that the true intent of the Standard (RI.2.3) is to order events and show their connection, not only focus on the dates. I told the students that, as long as the events were in order, that they did not have to have dates. This is how the students timeline looked without dates.
