Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Plot: Twists and turns - Section 2: Mini-Lesson

Although the Plot of many stories follow the roller coaster format, there will be some that vary. Sometimes a climax can occur at the beginning of a text and other times it happens at the very end. It is important to discuss this with the students at some point in the week in case they come across books that don’t fit the typical structure. When they do the Plot Guide, I have found that it is most effective for students to begin by plotting the climax first, then go back to the beginning to show the events that led to it. After the climax, they can include the most important falling action before they come to the end. Sometimes, the best books are the ones that have an unexpected Plot structure or lots of twists and turns with many climaxes. For a basic understanding of Plot, however, the simple roller coaster hill works well.
