Reflection: Rules and Consequences Segments First - Section 2: Line Constructions and Notes

One important activity that we also worked on in this class focused on creating classroom rules.  I would suggest that you try to complete an activity like this within the first week or two of class, whenever time permits.  In the handout, classroom rules activity, students are asked to choose 4 rules that they believe are the most important to establishing a positive learning environment.  I provide a list of 7 common rules that my students have chosen in the past, and if desired, there is also a space for students to write in their own rule.  Then, as a class, we go through each rule and I ask students to raise their hand for each rule they chose as the most important.

Each year the rules vary but I find that "one person speaks at a time" and also, "respect yourself, others and the classroom environment" have always been chosen by all of my classes.  I really love this activity and I find that it sets a positive tone for the entire year by giving students a voice on the rules for their classroom.
