Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Senses - Section 3: Partner Work

Well my students did struggle here a little and I believe it was because of my text choice.  It seems if you pick the right book the lesson will teach itself. What I did was pick My Five Senses which is actually a non-fiction text that teaches students about the senses. I should have picked a book that would use words or phrases to develop feeling related to the senses.  A book with a great deal of descriptive language would have helped students understand how words or phrases appeal to the senses, not explain them.

A better choice might be Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto.  There is a great deal of descriptive language and there are specific events that appeal to the senses.

The part that says, "Christmas trees glittered in the window, the ring sparkled, and arms full of bright presents," appeals to sight.  "Their hands were sticky with masa” appeals to touch.  "The windows grew white with the delicious smelling curls of steam” appeals to both sight and smell. These are just a few examples of how rich this text is with words and phrases that appeal to the senses!
