Integers Intro - Section 1: Launch

This pre-assessment was valuable. Students seemed to understand the operations on the assessment, it was the concept of negative integers that posed a problem for them. We will have to move slowly through this unit to help build conceptual understanding. I'm not sure if most of my students even realized the negative sign was there.

# Integers Intro

Lesson 1 of 13

## Objective: SWBAT to define and identify integers and absolute value.

#### Launch

**POD**

As student enter the room, they will have a seat, take out their **Problem of the Day** (POD) sheet and begin to work on the question on the SMARTboard. The POD also allows students to use **MP 3** continually based on the discussions we have about the problem each day. The POD today is an Integers PreAssessment. Students will answer questions on the PreAssessment to indicate what they already know about the content and help frame how learning progresses through the unit.

**Learning Target**

The target for the day is also on the SMARTboard each day when students enter the room. The target for today’s lesson is to help students identify and define integers and absolute value.

Students will copy notes on integers and absolute value using the **Integers Intro SMART notebook**. Part of the notes activity includes discussion with a partner on the definitions and applications of the terms. The narrative, **Integers Intro**, explains the goal of this part of the leson.

The **Exit Ticket** today is to respond to the following prompt: Explain how to determine the value of |-71|.

The responses to this prompt will let me know how much the students understood about our discussion and activity today. If there is an obvious misconception about what absolute value is and how to describe that value that can be addressed in future PODs in the unit.
