Mathematical Me - Section 2: Explore

In hindsight, I will change the way I introduce the project next year. I think giving the students baby steps first would be a better way. Maybe we will do each section of the content separately to help students digest it. They seemed overwhelmed with trying to find an answer to each section right away. I don't want them to feel like giving up so early in the year. I want them to feel empowered and to feel like they can succeed in math so next year I will break the directions down and make the project into smaller steps.

# Mathematical Me

Lesson 5 of 7

## Objective: SWBAT use each of the mathematical domains for Grade 7 to describe who they are.

*40 minutes*

#### Launch

*7 min*

**POD**

The project we are working on for the next two days will take the entire class period. We will not have a problem of the day to complete, but rather a discussion about project goals and requirements and use class time to work on the project.

**Learning Target**

The target for the day is also on the SMARTboard each day when students enter the room. The target for today’s lesson is to have students use each of the domains to create a description of themselves.

#### Explore

*30 min*

We will work on an in-class project. Students will create a mathematical version of themselves to introduce themselves to the class. Each of the five domains will be illustrated. Students will provide a description of themselves either using the sample descriptions given on the project sheet or creating one for themselves. Students can also use the web site: www.achievethecore.org as a resource if they are unable to create a description they want to use.

I want to see the mathematical thinking students generate when they drive the thinking. For example, expressing their age in seconds may generate thinking about expressing their age in another numerical form such as an exponent or as a math problem. I also want them to understand that our classroom is a place where divergent thinking is celebrated. The more great ideas, the better! This project should help establish a forum for thinking critically and exploration. This should be a constant theme as students display their work. Their creativity and individualization will definitely be celebrated as my students share.

#### Landing

*3 min*

To end class today, after all of the materials are put away, we will discuss any questions students may have about the project. If they want to work at home they can, I just want to make sure we are all on the same page with understanding before they leave class. If there are no questions about what we have done in class today or what we will do tomorrow, I will ask students to share descriptors that they created with the class. Sharing that thinking may spark an idea in a classmate about something they may want to do with the descriptors they used.
