Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines The Body Book - Section 1: Warm Up


It is true that the CCSS are expecting us to be reading and responding to more nonfiction texts.  The curriculum my district uses has only one nonfiction piece a week.  I find it difficult for me to find extra nonfiction because of time constraints. It is fun when I can find a fiction text and a nonfiction text that are of the same topic.  It is fun to show the difference in how the book looks and sounds when reading it.  It is important for me to expose my students to nonfiction for future grades are tested on their ability to read and respond to questions about the text.  As adults we do read and depend on nonfiction for our jobs and every day life.  For example, being able to read the Drivers Test study guide is important.  Thank goodness, I can expose my students and still have fun with nonfiction text.  I am laying the foundation for them to understand and see the difference.

Big Idea: The CCSS is encouraging us to read and respond to nonfiction text. We will act out the book and write what we can do with our bodies.
