Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation Culture Building with the Math Practice Standards - Section 2: Transition to STEM Video


After teaching this lesson, I couldn't help but wonder what it would look like if I had the students make a similar PSA (public service announcement) as the culminating piece in this lesson.  Although the activity seems like fun and games, it could do great things for the culture of the class and create "quotable" moments that can last the whole semester, and beyond.  Aside from the joy that this would bring to the second day of school, if would also provide the teacher the platform to discuss professional technology use - - which is something that was missing from this unit originally.  Collaboration and innovation would also be at the forefront, and it would be another great way to roll out the Math Practice Standards.  The more I think about this modification, the more I like it!  

This is just one more way to create a safe learning environment for your students.  Remember, they typically walk into our classes on day #1 DREADING it.  Let's turn the tables on them and get something accomplished in terms of our classroom culture at the same time!
