Reflection: Student Ownership Current Events - Section 3: Sharing Events

As students read their Currrent Events Summary, I noticed they were more enthusiastic about their article when they were more interested in the topic I gave them (see source).  Students were not only more interested, they made connections to real world applications by writing about information from the article that was most familiar to them.  Perhaps it is a better idea to let students choose their article or bring one of interest to them from home when I repeat this current event writing activity.  A great extension is to assign students to write weekly in a current events journal for homework.  This will give students more opportunities to choose a favorite article and involve their families in current event discussions as well. I like the idea of keeping a journal that is completely filled with article clippings attached to it, along with matching summaries.
