Reflection: Rigor Think About Related Addition Facts to 10 - Section 2: Develop the Concept


I have a variety of ability levels in my class, and because of those levels I often have other adults in my classroom besides myself.  Unfortunately sometimes my students come to rely too heavily on the assistance of teachers to help them, even when they may not need it.  The idea of allowing students to struggle through a problem is one that is open to much conversation.  I believe that it is appropriate to allow students to struggle with a problem and try to make connections on their own.  I try to allow my students ample time and unlimited access to manipulatives to help them solve a problem, telling my students to try a few different ways before they raise their hand asking for help.  

In this lesson, it is appropriate to allow students to work with the manipulatives to see if they can ake the connection on their own.  The goal is to let them find the relationship between addition and subtraction facts.  Because they have had exposure to fact families they should be able to see this. However, you can gather information about student understanding from those who cannot readily see the connection.

Objective: Students will be able to find the differences for subtraction facts by finding the related addition fact.

Big Idea: Students can use their knowledge of using addition to make ten to help them find the related subtraction fact.
