Reflection: Real World Applications Strategies for Content Specific Vocabulary - Section 2: Mini-Lesson

I am extending this lesson into tomorrow.  I had technology issues.  I was blocked from using our school's wireless system and my personal laptop.  I was not able to access the National Geographic website in a timely manner- I was eventually able to show it but the scrambling around did not allow me to focus primarily on the synonym activity. Worksheet #1 was definitely more accessible to  all my students compared to the naked words on Worksheet #2.  Bringing the world into my classroom via technology is essential to build students' background knowledge- but is adds to the list of potential snags and obstacles.  Also checking out the ipads and laptops for student use is critical.  I want to allow students access to information.

Im not sure yet how I will use the additional written resources on Naked Mole Rats.  I might use them in the coming days for a mini-lesson, or offer them to students today who want to learn more about these fascinating little creatures, or have them available for strategy groups. Options and choice is good for everyone in the classroom.  I want kids to be clamoring to read. And devouring texts with a lens for learning and discovering how writers structure text.
