Reflection: High Expectations Chugging Right Along with Subordinating Conjunctions! - Section 5: Review

At home, in a conversation with a friend, I was talking about how my third graders are learning about conjunctions.  My friend said, "Really?  Do you expect a third grader to use the terms 'coordinating conjunction' and 'subordinating conjunction'?"  My answer was, "Yes, of course!"  I think this is a perfect example of the high expectations we see in the key shifts in the ELA CCSS.  One of the key shifts of the ELA CCSS is that students build a growing academic vocabulary.  Terms such as 'coordinating conjunctions' and 'subordinating conjunctions' are terms that my third graders can use so long as the expectations of using them are maintained, and this will help meet this key shift.
