Reflection: Complex Tasks Writing a Metaphysical Conceit - Section 1: Creating Strange Comparisons

I decided that with this project I would teach writing poetry the way I taught the students to read poety.  I divided the lesson into the same four parts they used from the Unpacking a Metaphor lesson.

Main Comparison became making a list of strange and unusual comparisons that the students made a list of

Main Images became the context of the poem.  The time, setting and voice the students would take on.

Language Devices became a discussion about the possibilities of rhythm and rhyme students could find in their own writing.

And the Overall Effect became the free-writes the students did to put all of the elements together.

I think this approach worked well because it was something the students were familiar with and had experience with, and were able to put into practice in their own writing.
