Reflection: Lesson Planning I Want to Make One of Those! (Part 1 of 2) - Section 1: Introduction

Whenever I do a lesson that includes a craft or a project I struggle with my conscience. Is this time used productively? There are so many skills and standards we have to cover, and so many things I want my students to enjoy and explore, that I need to maximize the use of the school time. After teaching this lesson, I decided that this was one of the cases in which completing the craft was a worthwhile use of their time because:

  1. It engaged them and motivated them to complete the assignment to the best of their ability.
  2. It provided a concrete link to the standard; they had to apply shared research and informational paragraph writing skills to a real life situation.
