At this point in the year I am still modeling reading and writing off the map.  I will eventually release this responsibility to the students, so I do it as often as I can now.  You will notice that I refer now to letter sounds rather than picture support read off the map.  Also at this point in the year, I am weaning kids off of the picture support on our thinking maps and guiding them to rely more on their letter/sound knowledge to find the word they want.  This is supported in our reading, as well.
