Reflection: Standards Alignment Publishing for the World - Section 2: Independent Practice


The standards state that students be able to use keyboarding skills. However, my district has not adopted keyboarding software. I was torn as whether or not to wait on this before allowing students to type. Do I allow them to develop bad pecking habits? Or not use the technology at all? In the end, I decided it was more important to allow students to learn and experience technology for educational purposes. I believe the benefits of doing so far outweigh their lack of keyboarding skills. From this experience alone they have learned how to log into a website, create and name a new document, type words onto the screen and find punctuation marks on the keyboard, add, bold, and center a title, experiment with font types and sizes, and interact with others using technology terms.

Big Idea: Students will create a new document and use the bold and center features of a word processing program.
