Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge The Gingerbread Man is Running! - Section 3: Assessment


The children could easily think of other action words for the writing piece of this activity, but their drawing skills are lacking in order for someone to clearly use the picture as a clue for decoding the verb.  I try to emphasize that neatness is important in the writing as well as in the drawing so that other people can enjoy their work.  I think that when we invest time into making something like this, we need to be able to use it over and over again.  By making the little booklet, my students can put the books in their book boxes and read them multiple times before taking them home.

Big Idea: Teaching kids about action verbs is important for both sentence and story writing by making the writing come alive.
