Reflection: Quizzes Walter Dean Myers' Day(s) Off - Section 2: Bad Boy Reading Quiz Two and Review


There are a variety of reasons why students may not be keeping up with the required reading of a central text, from not having the time to read, to not choosing to read, to not understanding what they are reading.  In the case of my students, it might even involve not having access to a copy of the text outside of class (though they all assure me that they have copies), as my students read on Kindles in the classroom and are then responsible for acquiring a copy of the text to use for outside reading.

The reading quizzes allow me to acutely hone in on the students who are not reading and address each one of them personally, to find out what is preventing them from keeping up.  The zeroes are by no means overwhelming, but each class tends to have a couple of students who earn them.  By utilizing the formative assessment of the reading quizzes, I can catch my non-readers early in a unit and get them back on track, before the situation becomes too dire and they lose their confidence with a text.

Objective: SWBAT complete a reading quiz on chapters 10-11 of Bad Boy, then continue reading chapter 12 as a whole group.

Big Idea: Myers? Myers? Students contemplate a bad boy's ditching habits and discover how he spends his time away from school.
