Reflection: Character vs. Nature Conflicts - Section 2: Representing Knowledge


I am amazed at the level of student engagement this activity achieved.  My class is very hands on and students love creating books, even when I don't tell them to.  The Conflict book student sample documents student knowledge of the types of conflict. So, this activity was very successful because it aroused their interest.  The "I Chart" idea taken from the Daily 5 structure as well as my documenting this lesson with my flip camera are great ways to enforce collaborative and focused learning among students.  Knowing that their actions will be replayed and analyzed on the big screen (my Promethean board) prompted on task behaviors.  The reflections created goals for the next time so that we can continually improve our class performance.

Objective: SWBAT describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. SWBAT write opinion pieces in which they introduce topic, state opinion, and support their opinion.

Big Idea: Use texts to learn about self (e.g., in literature, conflicts dictate resolutions—connect to such conflicts and resolutions in own lives)
