Reflection: Classroom Setup Tubing Tens - Create a Story - Section 4: Wrap-up


The value of effective verbal communication cannot be overstated. My 3rd graders will be spending so much time online and on their phones by the time they are young adults that, unless this trend changes, it is very possible that their social skills will not be as well-developed as they should be.

It is something I have observed in the work place with colleagues and parents who spend the majority of their time interacting through a screen instead of in-person. The instantaneousness of one’s ability to express an opinion (there’s no wait time online), the required or requested brevity (FB, Twitter, texting) and lack of filters (side effect of being several degrees of separation away from the recipient) are frequently inappropriate in a professional setting or in a formal social setting.  Therefore it's even more important now than it was ten years ago to teach my students how to have a conservation with another person in which there is a balance between authentic listening and sharing.  

When students listen they should have their paper down so that they aren't thinking about what they are going to say and they should have their eyes on the speaker.  They should listen well enough so that they can repeat what the other child said, extend it, or ask a relevant question about it.  

Civil conversation, a social and life skill, can be very appropriately practiced within a math lesson and it doesn't take a lot of time to set up once procedures are in place.  I start to practice the procedure for sharing with a partner at the start of the year.  I teach it through direct modeling and then explicit practice of the skill without difficult content.  (They might greet each other, or ask what they are having for lunch or what they did over the weekend).  I demonstrate and have them practice how to walk to a partner, how to sit facing one another, how to put their paper down and show their partner that they are giving them their undivided attention).
