Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Measuring A Foot - Section 3: Covering Our Own Foot


It is important that students learn to be accurate with their counts and that they learn to use a strategy to help them be more accurate and to have the ability to easily recount their total (CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP6).  During the introduction of this activity, I took time to model such a strategy.  As students are counting, I will want to see how has a grasp on this idea and who still relies on moving one from the pile and counting.

Measuring A Foot

Unit 10: Working with Numbers, Operations, and Story Problems
Lesson 7 of 13

Objective: SWBAT measure area by covering an outline with inch tiles. SWBAT record, organize, and interpret numerical information.

Big Idea: Introducing are one foot at a time! Students will learn how to cover and count the area of their for outline by covering with 1 inch tiles. They will then count the total tiles needed for their own foot and graph the information.
