Reflection: Gradual Release Titanic Week! Traveling in Luxury...Some of You Day Two - Section 3: Main Idea and Supporting Details


I find it's important to offer students a lot of modeling and direct instruction when learning a new skill, but then before going to independent practice, it's important to let them work in small groups.  There are many benefits to working with peers.  Since I have been implementing the Common Core this year, and working on Speaking and Listening standards, I notice that I am doing a lot more cooperative group activities.  Today is one sample of that, while the students read, and practice finding the main idea and supporting details.  I notice that my students encourage and coach one another as they work together.  Offering them these opportunities makes learning social, interactive, and meaningful.

Unit 2: Ocean Inspired Unit

Objective: SWBAT identify the main idea and supporting details while reading an informational magazine. SWBAT make connections between an informational and fiction text about the same topic.

Big Idea: It's day two aboard the RMS Titanic. Your class reads more about the Titanic in their informational magazine, and practices identifying the main idea and most relevant supporting details in small groups.
