Reflection: Modeling We Wrote the "Head," Time for the Body Paragraphs - Section 2: The Under-ultized, but Ever-Important Topic Sentence


Some students might be sick of looking at the same model essay over and over again-- they have had to reference it every day this week-- but today's lesson seems to have helped. The discussion was relatively quick and focused, so even those students who are sick of the model essay still benefited from the mini-lesson. We didn't reread everything; instead we focused on the topic sentence of the first body paragraph and referenced only the other elements of the essay as they pertain to this one sentence. By the end of the class, they already had stronger paragraphs.

Lesson 5 of 8

Objective: SWBAT use words, phrases, and clauses to link the major sections of the text, create cohesion, and clarify relationships between claims and reasons by focusing on and developing strong topic sentences.

Big Idea: Teaching my students how to write topic sentences well is important because topic sentences link claims and create a more cohesive essay.
