Reflection: Debate Saving Endangered Animals Debate - Section 4: Evaluation and Closure

I have found using debates as a performance task helps students to learn to identify the main idea, supporting details, and conclusions.  They learn to selectively omit less important information and categorize information during note-taking.  These reading comprehension skills are essential for students to become more competent readers, writers, speakers, and listeners.  Debates can really be a vital link to the entire 4th grade curriculum.  Higher level Bloom's taxonomy skills such as evaluation is also a crucial part of this lesson as students reflect upon the discourse which takes place during the debate and determine whether or not the discourse is Common Core-aligned using an evaluator rubric.
