Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Reading the Topic, Main Idea, and Details - Section 4: Independent Practice


One thing I notice over the past couple of days was that a small group of students were still struggling with identifying the topic and main idea.  I decided to forgo the collaborative activity so that I could spend uninterrupted time with this group.  Because of the time factor I needed a short narrative that was easy enough for this group of students to read.  While the practice page from the student work book was short, it did give my students a little extra practice.  Once the one student noticed that the reading part went in the same order as the graphic organizer, the concept of topic, main idea, and details, seemed to make more sense to this group of students.
