Reflection: Lesson Planning BIG Questions About Informational Text! - Section 4: Teacher's Turn

As we tackle this more difficult academic vocabulary, students may ask for clarification. This student asked about the words 'inferential' vs 'informational'. It was a great chance to go back and review these words that sound similar, but have different meanings. The Common Core State Standards are encouraging us to help students acquire and utilize academic vocabulary in situations that are natural. Instead of teaching a list of words in isolation, my students are learning 'informational' as we talk about the text that has describes history and science. They are learning to use the word 'inferential' in this lesson as they define words that don't have a meaning specified.  By learning and practicing these words in context, the students will learn the meanings more quickly and be able to differentiate the meanings more accurately.
