Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Eye of the Storm Close Read - Section 5: Closure

This lesson was effective because it used a balanced literacy approach - reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Students delved deeper using critical thinking skills as they used student-led inquiry through student-generated questions and storm survivor interview questions.  Using a photo as text to begin the lesson, spoke to students in a different way than printed text.  The photos provided very real and shocking images of just what people experienced as a result of a hurricane. By providing students an opportunity to independently share details and information through a written summary, I was able to check their understanding of information discussed during the lesson.
