Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation You know what I really hate? - Section 3: Working with the Ideas


I used some really strong language to inspire kids to participate in this lesson.  I asked them to make a list of the things they "hate."  While they definitely got into it -- with some lists reaching three columns long -- I am not sure how I feel about the approach that I took.  I guess the issue that I am having is that I feel like my students are too willing to hate, and maybe I shouldn't encourage it even more.

My intentions were good, and I made rules.  No hating "real" people, like classmates or family members.  And we all seemed to agree that hate was just shorthand for "really would prefer to avoid."  But I still feel like the language needs work.  How can I get there without taking that route?

On the bright side, the kids' lists were both funny and revealing.  When they clamored to share, I realized that you can learn a lot more about a 13-year old by asking them what they don't like, rather than what they like (since there is so much pressure to like certain things, like name brands and technology and certain types of music.)

One of my favorite moments in the lesson:  When my brilliant, yet nutty, male student almost leapt out of his chair to tell us that he hates "double sided tape." Who knew that a thirteen year old boy would have such an intense relationship with double sided tape?

On a final note: I did this lesson with two classes.  During the second time through, we had a fire drill which made us miss the "looking ahead" question.  That was a bummer, because the lesson felt a little silly without the connection.
