Reflection: Student Led Inquiry Vocabulary Inquiry, Day 1 - Section 4: Vocabulary


Student led inquiry. 


It's unsettling.


It's student led, which means that I'm not 100% in control. I'm in control of the class, I'm guiding them through the process, I'm setting ground rules to make the process successful, but I'm not in control of the words the students choose.


Would I have chosen the same words?  Absolutely.


And yet, knowing that, it's still unsettling.  The preparing that I'm doing for class isn't a whole lot.  I collected the words on a PowerPoint slide, but that's it. 


I'm unsettled. 


But it's authentic.  The students are learning words that I would have chosen anyway (and some words I wouldn't have), so they have intrinsic motivation.  We've got fifteen words!  If I gave the students fifteen vocabulary words to learn, they'd mutiny!  I'd be walking the plank!  But since they came up with these words?  It's okay.


But I'm still unsettled.



And completely random--see that HON ENG up at the top of the page?  I put that there to differentiate between the words that Honors English and English 7 came up with. The differences?  Not very many.  But that's not the point.  One student asked, "What's honeng?" because he didn't recognize it as an abbreviation of two words.  Sometimes middle schoolers are just the cutest thing ever.
